The short version
Moving a production to a location is one of the most expensive things in filmmaking. A single location day can cost $100,000 or more, with 85 to 150 people and a convoy of trucks on the move, all racing the sun.
The existing fixes each ask for something in return. Green and blue screens lose real light and live in post-production. LED volume virtual production solves the light but still makes the whole team travel to a stage, at $30,000 to $100,000 per day.

01What is at stake+
Every scene in a film, a television episode, or a commercial happens somewhere: a desert highway, a downtown street, the inside of a moving car. When that place is not where the production is based, the traditional answer is to go there. Not just the actors: the cameras, the lights, the trucks, the trailers, and every person needed to run them all travel together. Crews call this a company move, and it is one of the most expensive and disruptive things a production can do.
And once everyone arrives, the location does not cooperate. The sun moves all day, weather changes by the hour, and a scene shot across two afternoons has to look like one continuous minute on screen. Productions end up spending their two most limited resources, time and money, fighting the environment itself.
Time. Daylight is a countdown that cannot be paused. When the matching light is gone, the shooting day is over whether the scene is finished or not.
Money. Travel days cost like shoot days: everyone is paid and everything is rented, but nothing usable is filmed while the production is in motion.
Continuity. Shots filmed hours or days apart must cut together as a single moment. Light that drifts between takes breaks the illusion and forces reshoots.
02The challenge+
Shooting on location looks real because it is real. But it cannot be scheduled around the sun, it cannot be repeated on demand, and it means moving the entire production to the place. Green/blue-screen compositing keeps everyone on a stage, but actors perform against a blank void, the light on them rarely matches the background added later, and every shot must be composited by hand in post-production before it looks finished.
Virtual production became the industry's answer: a stage wrapped in a giant LED screen that plays the environment live behind the actors. The screen casts real light onto them, and camera tracking keeps the background in true perspective, shifting naturally as the camera moves. Driving scenes can be filmed without ever closing a street. It works. But it moves the problem rather than removing it: the production still travels, this time to the stage.
Cost. Large LED volume stages rent for roughly $30,000 to $100,000 per day, before crew, content, and stage services are added.
You still travel. Talent and crew must leave the sets they are already using and relocate to wherever the stage is, with all the scheduling and expense that brings.
Not for every production. These stages are few and heavily booked. For film, television, and commercial productions on tight schedules and finite budgets, the math often does not work.
The same scene, six ways+
One example makes the difference clear: a simple scene of two actors talking inside a moving car. Here are six ways to film it, and each one asks something different of the people making the film, show, or commercial.
None of these methods replaces the others. New tools expand the choices available to filmmakers who want to use technology to open up more ways to create.
car-to-car
The actors really drive. A camera car runs alongside or ahead, filming the actors' car on real roads in real traffic.
The safer way to keep it real. The car rides on a trailer while the crew films the actors inside, driving the actual route.
The classic trick. Footage of the road plays on a screen behind a parked car while the actors perform in front of it.
The actors perform in front of a blank green or blue wall. Months later, compositing artists cut them out of the color and blend a background in behind them, shot by shot.
The environment plays live on a giant wall of LED screens behind the actors, casting real light and reflections onto them, while camera tracking shifts the background in perspective as the camera moves.

03The Radiant approach+
Meridian 4D™ is Radiant Images' portable capture system, and it inverts the model: instead of bringing the production to the environment, or to a stage, Radiant's team brings the environment to the production. The team travels to any location or working set in the world and captures it photographically using Gaussian Splatting, a technique that rebuilds a real place as a photoreal, explorable three-dimensional scene from real photography, processed in partnership with Gracia. Nothing is AI-generated: every surface, reflection, and imperfection in the finished environment was actually photographed.
Alongside the scene itself, Meridian 4D™ records the environment's actual light using image-based lighting, a captured record of how light really behaved in that place at that moment. That is what makes the result usable on set: the captured environment plays back as a virtual background wherever the production already is, and its lighting matches the light the production is already shooting under. And because the whole environment exists in 3D space, the camera can make any move, without the restrictions of physics. Talent and crew never leave set. Driving plates, the backgrounds for scenes inside moving vehicles, come from the same real capture.
